You have to install the software on a local Windows 2000, XP Pro, or Server
2003 machine. This machine must have a static IP address and have access
to a real DNS server.
We manage the list and provide updates up to 4 times per day through the
Internet. There is nothing to install on indivudal user machines.
You can override our list, and choose from our categories of things you wish to
block.

How do you set the options for filtration?
The software comes with a client application to choose your options.
You may choose each category that you wish to allow or block. You can
override our lists using the local allowed and local blocked pages. Any
site added to the local allowed will always be allowed even if we would
normally block it.

Want to start using a web filter today?
With our web filter software you can start filtering your web browsing in
under one hour. Your company most likely has either its own DNS
server or a DHCP server that assigns DNS server addresses (provided by
your ISP) to each computer on the network, if not both. In either case
every request for a web page from your network eventually goes to your
ISP's DNS servers.
Emerald Web Shield takes over that job as a part of our service. All you
need to do is configure your DHCP server to issue us as your DNS. The new
filter machine will then handle every website address query.
If the address for an objectionable site is requested then Emerald Web
Shield software will not return the actual address but instead return the
address to one of our harmless block pages.
Users can report sites directly to us without contacting the local
administrator.
These block pages tell the user that the site they have attempted to
access has been blocked by the Emerald Web Shield. The block page
provides a mechanism for the user to request that the site be reviewed if they
feel it was blocked in error. The user can also provide an email address
with this request which we will use to send an explanation of the action that
was taken after we manually reviewed the site.
In many cases a user will request a bad site to be removed from our block list
unaware that the site they were trying to reach was in fact objectionable or
harmful. The administrators of many objectionable sites choose
domain names very similar to those of acceptable sites and count on users to
mistype the address. The domain name whitehouse.com for example at one
time lead to a pornographic website.

Perhaps you want to prevent users from visiting online auction sites or allow
access to a blocked site for a specific reason. By using the
configuration application you have access to local lists that allow you to
override our master lists.
The web filter software connects to our server network throughout the day to
download updates to the master filter lists.
